Salary: This position is full-time with compensation of $50,000-52,000 negotiable and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental and vision coverage and generous vacation.
Grassroots Global Justice (GGJ) is a national alliance of US-based grassroots organizing (GRO) groups organizing to build an agenda for power for working and poor people and communities of color. We understand that there are important connections between the local issues we work on and the global context, and we see ourselves as part of an international movement for global justice. GGJ focuses on bringing GRO organizations into a long-term process of relationship building, political alignment and the development of transformational leadership, particularly for working and poor women and gender-oppressed people of color. The membership of GGJ adopted a framework in 2011 that calls for a holistic approach to building grassroots global justice: No War, No Warming, Build an Economy for the People and the Planet. We weave and bridge together US-based GRO groups and global social movements working for climate justice, gender justice, an end to war, and a just transition to a new economy that is better for people and the planet.
Key Duties Summary: This position will lead GGJ’s Narrative Strategy and Strategic Communications work, implement communications elements of GGJ’s programs and events, and support GGJ member groups playing a role in our communications. This position also manages media communications systems and all public GGJ materials.
Bilingual fluency required: English–Spanish or English-French. Portuguese a plus.
Travel requirements: average 3-5 days per month in the US, and 15 days per year internationally.
GGJ has a remote staff of 5 full time positions in multiple locations; and runs multiple convenings, national campaigns and coordinates international delegations each year.
Context: Grassroots Global Justice Alliance’s current strategy framework integrates three strands of work with intersectional politics and complementary goals that are the focus for the strategic communications work.

GGJ organizes about 10+ events and delegations per year, which the Communications Coordinator will support:
- Programmatic Events, Actions and Convenings: Just Transition Assemblies, World March of Women actions, National speaking tours, etc.
- International Delegations: World Social Forum, UNFCCC climate conventions, World March of Women international gatherings, etc.
- National Convenings such as GGJ Member Assembly and our member participation in the Climate Justice Alliance national gathering.
1) Develop and Lead narrative strategy and communications plans for GGJ’s programs (20 % time)
- Conceptualize and lead GGJ communications and earned media strategies for the above program work; including narrative message development and coordinate implementation of social media strategies, member education, and public materials.
2) Coordinate communications to GGJ Member groups and Allies (30%)
- Lead content development that helps build alignment around GGJ strategy, political framing and program priorities.
- Develop and write GGJ statements on key political moments and GGJ programmatic work; and talking points for staff and members for all GGJ events.
- Support content generation and collection of stories of impact by Organizers, Development Coordinator and National Coordinator.
- Train and coach GGJ staff and members on messaging.
- Stay up to speed in this continually evolving area of work to help the alliance implement best practices and experiment with new tools and resources.
3) Lead external communications and coordinate a consistent GGJ public profile (20%)
- Lead public information strategies for GGJ publications and coordinate dissemination via targeted outreach, social media presence, and media outlets.
- Share news of GGJ member organizations: Coordinate with Organizers to send out regular updates through E-bulletin.
- Manage emergency response campaigns (3-4 times/year).
- Develop and maintain media relationships, including keeping media data base updated.
- Establish and maintain public profile through website, Facebook and other media. Plan and lead implementation for website content. Work with IT/ISP vendors for website maintenance and updating needs.
- Support Development Coordinator to produce and send out online and mail solicitation campaigns.
- Coordinate and maintain GGJ’s supporter and ally list growth; coordinating list exchanges, updating, and segmenting existing supporters in our database.
4) Write and produce materials, including reports, e-newsletters, and online content (20%)
- Plan, write and edit reports about GGJ’s work: coordinate content development and editorial roles of staff, members and contract writers.
- Coach GGJ staff on writing for intended audiences of their reports and campaign materials.
- Edit GGJ public communications written by staff or contractors to ensure consistent framing.
- Conceptualize video components for selected activities.
- Supervise contractors: writers, graphic designers, video producers, and printers as needed.
- Support Logistics Coordinator to ensure consistent messaging and quality for branded items such as t-shirts, caps, kerchiefs, stickers, etc.
5) Participate in GGJ team (10%)
- Participate in three staff retreats and 1-2 Coordinating Committee meetings, per year. Travel required.
- Attend and lead communications teams for GGJ events and international delegations. US and International Travel required.
- Attend weekly phone staff meeting or other meetings as appropriate.
- Check in with National Coordinator and two Organizers on a weekly basis.
- Participate on member engagement calls and GGJ events to stay actively engaged with the membership.
- Compliance with GGJ remote working policies and procedures: receipts check requests, calendaring, etc.
Qualifications and Experience
- At least 5 years communications experience and demonstrated ability to lead narrative strategy and communications strategies in the social justice / environmental / or human rights sectors.
- Attention to detail and the ability to maintain a variety of projects and activities simultaneously.
- Excellent writing and editing skills for diverse audiences.
- Support the mission, vision and goals of Grassroots Global Justice Alliance. Familiarity with one or more of GGJ’s program areas: climate/environmental justice, racial and gender justice, economic transition.
- Experience in multi-racial, multi-cultural settings.
- Ability to represent GGJ in a variety of settings and to establish/maintain broad organizational relationships.
- Familiarity with CRM systems and Database management (Powerbase).
- Experience using social media & web development tools: Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, Drupal-based website.
- Experience with earned media strategies and knowledge of trends in media communications.
- Knowledge of common computer applications: MS Office, Google docs, Dropbox, Mac environment, and video tele-conferencing systems. IT systems skills a plus.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining close communication with remote staff team.
- Willingness to travel: average 3-5 days per month in the US, and 15 days per year internationally.
- Proficiency with Design software such as Adobe creative suite.
- Experience with creative material design (photo graphics for social media, report layout, logo design, etc.).
- Facilitation and training skills with grassroots organizing sector a plus.
- Driver’s license and liability insurance.
