Arizona. 1070. You.
National - In the last 5 years, over 6,000 immigration related bills have been proposed in the State Legislature - that's more than one a day per session. Rather than finding solutions to problems of unemployment, foreclosures, and in the educational system, it seems as though the state capital has become a legislative laboratory to make the lives of migrants miserable. It has become the status quo to blame immigrants for virtually every problem the state faces. In southern Arizona, the Border Patrol's presence has become the norm, as has the death toll of people found in the desert. And then we have Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, building upon his chain gangs and tent cities, parading around the city conducting raids and sweeps. He has already stated, he's willing to build tent cities all the way to the border to make room for migrants.Read More >

National - This week in Phoenix a federal judge is hearing arguments from immigrant and civil rights groups, the Department of Justice and the State of Arizona over whether or not SB 1070 should be implemented on July 29. SB 1070 makes it a state crime to be undocumented and authorizes law enforcement to pull over and question any person they have a "reasonable suspicion" to believe doesn't have papers.Read More >

'F' por inspección de vivienda de alquiler
Los Angeles - El Departamento de Vivienda y particularmente su Divisin de Inspecciones de Edificios le han fallado a miles de residentes de viviendas de alquiler en Los Angeles. Se trata de un inframundo de paredes descascaradas, goteras interminables, ratas, cucarachas y otras plagas inmundas impropias de una urbe del primer mundo que los inspectores parecen no ver o que por una serie de deficiencias del código de vivienda son incapaces de erradicar.Read More >

Bill Quigley and Tony Romano: We Call These Projects Our Home
National - Public housing in this country is rapidly becoming endangered, and with it, the lives of low-income people. Public housing provides a safety net for the working poor and those on a fixed income, which is critical in today's housing market considering that as of 2008, there was no county in the U.S. where an individual working 40 hours a week at minimum wage could afford a one-bedroom apartment at fair market rent.Read More >

For Drug Users, Coalition Serves as Voice in Albany
New York City - In a borrowed room in Chelsea on a recent Monday night, 13 people sat under fluorescent lights discussing the time-honored art of lobbying and the cold calculus of political persuasion. And for this unusual organization, the typical difficulty of being heard among the vast jumble of special interests clamoring for attention in Albany is complicated by the fact that it represents drug users, past and present.Read More >

Democracy Begins at Home: Public Housing Tenants Without a Voice
New York City - Walk through a typical New York City public housing complex, and you are not likely to see many signs of civic life among drab high-rises and asphalt lots. But once upon a time, public housing was seen as a foundation for community-building, and residents were supposed to have a say in how their neighborhoods were run.Read More >
