General description:

City Life/Vida Urbana is a 40-year old community-based, bilingual social justice organizing organization focused on preventing housing displacement.  We are seeking an individual who has a strong commitment to serving the interests of low- and moderate-income people, overcoming racial, class and gender barriers. The organization has recently expanded its work through replicating its Bank Tenant Organizing model to 4 areas or cities and towns within Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and shared this model both regionally and nationally. It works closely with a growing network of groups addressing the issue of foreclosure–related displacement and housing displacement in general.

Role:  To assist CLVU replicating sites assess their strengths, current capacity and future direction, and develop plans for sustaining the group past 2014, when the current funding ends; To provide support to begin implementation of those plans; To facilitate a process to assist these groups in defining and creating stable, long-term organizational structures and relationships, and written agreements clarifying role, responsibilities and expectations.

Primary Responsibilities:

Coordination and Facilitation of Replicating Sites Sustainability Plans

•    Work with Executive Director and Organizing Coordinator to develop an overall plan and priorities for assisting the replicating sites with creating sustainability plans and the implementation of those plans;
•    Meet with Lead Organizers and Steering Committees to better understand site history, state of model replication, adaptation of model, current status of organizing work and campaigns, and ideas and vision on future direction;
•    Coordinate the setting of overall organizational development goals, strategy and final plans

Planning Long-term Organizational Structures and Relationships
•    Organize a series of planning meetings with Steering Committees of replicating sites to clarify the organization form—nonprofit independence, project under local umbrella organization, or semi-autonomous entity under larger nonprofit
•    Integrate plans for organizational formation as part of the sustainability planning process
•    Finalize plan with Steering Committee and write up final plan

•    Assist groups in writing a one year action plan and begin its implementation

•    Assist groups in defining a monitoring and evaluation process for the sustainability plan

Work experience and skill requirements

•    Minimum of three to five years of experience doing organizational development
•    Demonstrated track record in helping groups clarify their direction and goals
•    Experience with social justice non-profits
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•    Strong organizational skills
•    Experience in working with boards to develop strategic, business or other long-term plans
•    Well organized with attention to detail, accuracy and strong synthesis skills
•    Superb active listening skills
•    Strong collaborative  and interpersonal skills
•    Excellent writing skills
•    Strong computer skills, MS Word, Excel, Google docs
