Across the country communities are grappling with sky-high rent and mortgage prices. Many of our elected leaders aren’t stepping up to make it right.

Right to the City Alliance in coordination with the Center for Popular Democracy and HIT Strategies polled registered voters across 5 key states — Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina — to understand how the crisis of housing affordability has impacted them and how it has influenced the kind of political leaders they want in office.

READ THE POLL MEMO

Voters agreed that the cost of housing is a critical issue in their lives and it is one that they see their elected leaders addressing nearly the least.

The poll revealed that voters overwhelmingly want to support elected leaders who lead with innovative housing solutions.

87%

Of voters said that the cost of rent and housing is a major or big problem in their state

75%

said housing costs are causing the most stress in their families, out of a list of economic issues

70%

stated that they are more likely to vote for someone who supports rent stabilization policies

67%

want to support elected leaders that back significant gov funding for permanently affordable rental housing

The “build, build, build” solutions offered up by developers and corporate landlords ring hollow with a majority of these voters.

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait for our political leaders to get the memo. Right to the City Alliance and Center for Popular Democracy member organizations have been organizing for these solutions for years and are fighting to make homes truly affordable for all.

Voters want rent stabilization, permanently affordable housing, just cause eviction and more.
